A calamity struck Lakeside High School in Ashtabula as the roof, burdened by an unprecedented snowfall this week, succumbed to the heavy weight above. The scene portrays distress, with visible separation at the top of the building, a clear distress signal for the educational institution.
“The roof is actually lifting from the building, and there’s a noticeable separation,” expressed Lisa Newsome, the Ashtabula Area City Schools Superintendent, with palpable concern. “At this juncture, every inch of Lakeside High is off-limits.”
In light of the inclement weather, the school district has declared a closure for the remainder of the week. Alarmingly, Lakeside High School will remain shut indefinitely, casting uncertainty over the community.
Amidst this turmoil, Principal Douglas Wetherholt finds himself navigating uncharted waters as he seeks a viable solution for approximately 800 high school students. His determination to reintegrate them into a physical classroom is resolute. “We’re exploring various options; whether that entails relocating them to a different building altogether or utilizing an off-site facility for the core of our schooling,” said Wetherholt, his mind racing with possibilities.
The immediate challenge? Securing a location, while a myriad of logistical considerations loom large. “Transportation, staff relocation, and ensuring our students receive adequate sustenance – lunches and breakfasts – are paramount,” Newsome elaborated, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the crisis.
Echoes of past challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic linger, yet the administration is leaning away from virtual learning for the time being. “We aim to have students back in a physical classroom by mid-next week if possible,” added Newsome. She is keen on establishing stability before the holiday recess. “It’s crucial for us to have something organized prior to the Christmas break. Our goal is to see them engaged in learning before that well-deserved pause.”
Meanwhile, the urgency intensifies as the district embarks on thorough inspections of other schools to confirm their safety. “As a parent, I would share those concerns; therefore, inspections have commenced to ensure our schools are safe,” Newsome remarked, embodying the gravity of the situation.
